             The Mold Puzzle

Questions & Answers

Q.               Will bleach kill mold?

A.                 If bleach killed all the mold there would be no reason for websites like this one.  While bleach can kill some species of mold, many of the common species of mold in your home are chlorine resistant and WON’T BE KILLED BY BLEACH.

     Q.       Do I have the, “BAD MOLD”?

A.              What mold growing in your house is good? Not all mold is toxic all the time. However, at
any given time the mold that didn’t bother you last week might make you sick this week.
Chances are it will continue to grow throughout your home and become a problem you
don’t want  anyway. Bottom-line, if there’s mold in your home you need to get rid of it.

     Q.       Is there a way I can tell if I have mold in my body?
     A.       Yes, new blood profiling tests designed to detect the human body's exposure to mold is
fast and affordable. One such laboratory can be found at www.biosignlabs.com

Q.              If I can see the mold growing do I need to test for it?

A.              Most of the time when you can see the mold growing there is no need to test for it. Think about
it, if you can see that your child has the Chicken Pox do you really need a blood test to prove it?  There are several good reasons to test for mold prior to remediation being preformed.

They are as follows:

Your insurance company demands testing prior to payment or before any work can be be started

You are a tenant / renter and have complained to your landlord about mold, but they have been negligent in their response to your needs. You may want to document the condition of your environment for any litigation you may have planed if you are intending to seek damages

Your work environment has symptoms of a “ Sick Building” and your employer and/or the landlord have shown negligence

Your are not sure that you really have mold

You just want to know what types of mold are present in your environment and in what quantities

Q.           After the mold is remediated from my home do I need testing to make sure it’s gone?

A.            ABSOLUTELY!  This assures you that your mold remediation contractor did the work they were supposed to have done. Remember to always use a disinterested third party to do your testing. Never let the same company that did the work do the pre or post remediation testing, this is a clear conflict of interest. It also may be the sign of a con-artist.

Q.           What if after the job is done the post remediation testing comes back bad?

A.           Prior to any work starting make sure you have in writing from your mold specialist that if the post remediation testing comes back not satisfactory by most laboratory standards they will re-clean at “NO” charge. They also should re-test at no charge as it’s not your fault they failed testing.

Q.         How much should I pay for mold remediation?

A.        The cheapest price is rarely going to be the best work.  The highest price is probably not good either. Remember, mold is a contaminant that will grow. It is a microbial that has been documented to cause adverse health effects. Mold has been directly linked to fungal infections, cancer and blindness to mention only a few of the documented health risks. The thing you’re paying for when you hire a professional is the experience and knowledge of your mold specialist. It is very important to get the job done right the first time! Remember this is your families or employees health your dealing with. Use common sense, ask a lot of educated questions. Check for mold certifications, Liability and Workers Compensation insurance, and get references.

Q.     How should I expect to pay?

A.     Customarily, it’s 1/3 down, 1/3 when the work starts, and 1/3 when your post remediation tests come back with acceptable results.

Q.  Can mold remediation be done while there is still standing water in the structure?

       A.     Absolutley "No", not until all water / humidity issues have been resolved and / or  repaired
